BOOK TWO: THE HANDMAIDENS OF ANARCHY
Now Available! The Handmaidens of Anarchy by Richard Brown 284 pages Book Two of the 2012 Saga ISBN 1-4116-4752-1 The story in The Handmaidens of Anarchy picks up Friday, October 26, 2012, first thing in the morning, right where Book One (The Return of the Pleiadians) left off. The city of River Branch is hanging by a thread as it hurtles down a road to chaos and crisis, which is not as bleak as it sounds given the interludes of humour that range from broad to vaudevillian. We finally find out what Andrew does for a living, and it's not pretty. In fact it's density, rot, and corruption with trouble galore. He is in an impossible situation where no matter what he does, things get worse -- not only for Andrew, but for the entire city. Melos sets off to establish his reign as the new head Pleiadian, ignoring the crises and confounding the humans to no end as he crops up all over the city trying to second guess and stop the unwelcome interlopers from Orion from getting a foot hold on planet Earth. Zelda becomes the ham-fisted den-mother of the R-Street gang, and Rathouse? Well, she's got designs on expanding the R-Street gang's influence into Stinger's turf. This is one very dicey situation which gets even worse when Zelda gets Rathouse so stoned Rathouse decides to launch an ill-advised raid into the safe zone. The situation with the Pink Flamingo Gymnasium on Buchanan Street takes a bizzare twist, and the battle-hardened soldiers guarding the building are so scared they are ready to run out the door screaming. However, General Rammet discovers he has far bigger trouble brewing elsewhere as the local born-again Christians have turned to blood thirsty urban terrorism. Sonja orders Jeffery to get involved up to his eyeballs in the army's problems whether Jeffery likes it or not (and he doesn't). Meanwhile, Walter and Darryl are making a bit progress cracking the ancient code, sort of, although this decoding business is turning out to be far more tricky than anyone first thought. Even the Easter bunny and a rare X-rated porn video from the old Soviet Union aren't going to help. And as for Skull, what can be said about Skull except that he's a villain, so he's up to no good every chance he gets. You can hiss and boo at him, but remember, he did pay attention to his lessons in Bible school. Ah yes, Cleomedeos. Well, we finally find out who he is and just what his agenda is about, more or less. He's still stirring things up at every available opportunity, and has some very good reasons to do so, or at least he thinks so. Naturally, there's a few other unexpected twists to the plot and some new characters, too. For instance, who is really running this decaying city? And what does Zelda's dog do when she goes for a walk? (Hint: ever meet a hunting dog who does not chase squirrels?) The book (but not the story) ends in mid-afternoon, and it certainly is not what Walter was expecting. Not at all. It goes far beyond his tidy little world of logic, and it's going to take at least Book Three for Walter to figure out what's going on. Maybe even more.
